An
ethnic group from eastern India, the Gadabas are classified as a Scheduled
Tribe in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
According
to the 2011 Indian census, there are 84,689 Gadabas in Odisha and 38,081 in

Gadaba, Sana Gadaba, Gutab Gadaba, Farenga Gadaba, and Allar Gadaba. Their
socioeconomic life is centered on farming and daily labor; they engage in both
plow cultivation and slash-and-burn cultivation. They reside in permanent
villages and are well-known for their tribal dance, the Dhemsa. They speak the
Austroasiatic language, Ollari, and the resulting lakes since the early 1980s.
A Gadaba
woman typically wears a very colorful two-piece dress, often striped in red,
blue, and white, which is woven by the women themselves. The ornaments they
wear are not very different from those of other tribes. Traditionally, Gadaba
women wear neck rings that weigh between 500 and 700 grams each and are
impossible to remove without the assistance of a blacksmith. This is done only
after their death.
