In Assam, people drank a type of medicinal beverage made from a plant that grew out of control. During 1823, an English Major named Robert Bruce became aware of this specific drinking habit. The Major was offered this therapeutic beverage by Bessa Gam, a Singpho chief whom Maniram Dewan had set up a meeting with. Bruce later got the Singphos to do him a favor by sending samples of the plant's leaves and seeds to the East India Company's Botanical Garden in Calcutta (now Kolkata) so that they could be examined scientifically. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, the samples' identification was denied. Charles Alexander Bruce, the brother of pioneer Major Bruce, finally succeeded in confirming that this widely growing plant was indeed a type of tea in 1834, and he named it Assam Tea (scientifically known as Camellia Sinosis). Subsequent studies have demonstrated that "tea" functions as an antioxidant that supports heart health, prevents cancer, and aids in the fight against and protection against a wide range of illnesses, including diabetes, blood pressure, tumors, ulcers, inflammation, intestinal issues, dental decay, and many more. Since its inception approximately 178 years ago, Assam has developed into a state that produces commercial tea. Tea cultivation in Assam is best suited to the state's lowlands, which have a tropical climate with a hot, wet season and a mild, dry winter. Assam tea is distinguished by its glossy, dark green appearance. Approximately 66,000 small tea growers and 825 major tea gardens in Assam currently produce about 1.5 million pounds of tea annually, or 20% of India's total tea production.
