Meet
our crew early in the morning. Following a briefing, we leave Delhi and begin
travelling along National Highway 1. You will go via locations like Panipat,
Karnal, and Kurukshetra today. When you get to the lovely city, check into your
lodging. Take a hotel room for the night.
Check
out of the motel and head out the door after an early breakfast. After a few
hours of riding over the plains of the State of Punjab, we enter the State of
Himachal Pradesh, popularly referred to as the "Land of the Gods." We
will pass through the towns of Mandi and Bilaspur. Once we cross Bhuntar, the
journey becomes more thrilling as we follow the Beas River all the way to
Manali. If you have time, venture out later in the evening to explore Old
Manali's vibrant streets. Take a hotel room for the night.
Today,
we will travel the renowned Manali-Leh Highway in the direction of Jispa. We
must traverse the formidable Rohtang Pass (3978m) early in the day before it becomes
too crowded, so leaving early is essential. Once we cross Rohtang, we enter the
Lahaul and Spiti District, where the scenery radically changes. The arid
hillsides of the chilly desert replace the verdant grasses. We continue our
journey around the charming mountain towns of Sissu and Keylong in the
direction of Jispa. Reach the location early in the evening and spend an
exciting night in tents.
Since
we will be spending the night at an elevation of above 4,000 meters, make sure
you stay fully hydrated by drinking a tonne of water. Even though today's ride
is one of the expedition's shorter rides, the adventure-filled terrain keeps
the heart rate up. Continue traveling towards Deepak Tal on the Manali-Leh
Highway after crossing Darcha. From here, the route begins to climb sharply in
the direction of the perilous Baralacha Pass (4890m), passing by Zing Zing Bar
and the breathtaking Suraj Tal emerald lake. Stop briefly after crossing
Baralacha and enjoy a well-earned lunch close to Bharatpur. Although the
topography changes significantly along the route, and the Tsarap River can be
seen on the left side, chiselling and roaring through the mountains, we
continue our journey to Sarchu along the same road. Expect a fairly
uncomfortable overnight stay in a tent when you arrive at Sarchu later in the
day.
It's
going to be a long but thrilling day of riding, so get on the road after an
early breakfast. Early in the day is the best time to cross water crossings,
which are frequently seen on the road leading to Leh. We begin our ascent
towards Nakee La (4769m) shortly after departing Sarchu, traversing the zigzag
Gata Loops, a set of 21 hairpin curves in a mere 7km. The ascent towards
Lachung La (5059m), another high mountain, starts just as the descent from
Nakee La is almost complete. We stop for lunch in the village of Pang, which is
4600 meters below sea level, after descending from Lachung La. After passing
Pang, the scenery begins to shift, and the 45-kilometer Morey Plains plateau
begins. We begin rising the Tanglang La (5328m), the highest motorable pass on
the Manali-Leh Highway, as we get closer to the end of the plains. Continue
riding along the powerful Indus River on the left bank towards Leh after
completing the third high mountain of the day. Arrive at Leh late at night and
unwind at the hotel.
Enjoy
a restful day in Leh after recharging with a nutritious breakfast. Regular bike
maintenance takes up the first part of the day, and the remainder of the day
can be devoted to touring some of the city's tourist attractions. Visit the Leh
Palace and take in the breathtaking terrace views of the Stok Kangri Mountain
range. To do some shopping and sample Ladakhi food in the neighborhood
restaurants, you might also decide to go to the Shanti Stupa and the local
market. Check into the motel for the night.
Following
a very leisurely day in Leh, we resume our journey and begin riding across what
is regarded as the world's highest motorable road in the direction of Nubra
Valley. Khardung La (5359m). Up until the checkpoint next to South Pullu, the
road leading to the pass is well-tarred and paved. After passing the
checkpoint, the road becomes slushy, with loose boulders on one side. Since it
is unsafe to spend a lot of time on top of the pass due to the high altitude
and thin air, have yourself photographed as soon as you get to Khardung La and
get on the road. After descending from the pass, we make a brief lunch stop
before continuing on our way. We stop briefly to see the 32-meter-tall Maitreya
Buddha statue at Diskit Monastery after riding for a few more hours. The sight
of the double-hump Bactrian camels grazing and the white sand dunes will greet
us as we enter the valley. Spend the night at the campsite or motel.
Following
breakfast, we begin our journey to Pangong Lake, Ladakh's most photographed
location. The journey should be rather intriguing even though we won't be
crossing any high passes today because we'll be traveling via Shyok on a much
less-traveled road. The majority of our journey will take us through the
villages of Agham, Shyok, Durbuk, and Tangste as well as along the stunning
Shyok River. Being careful is crucial because the route is still slushy and has
several thrilling water crossings and rough terrain. The final portion of the
journey will be along the lake after crossing Durbuk. The lake makes a lasting
impression on guests from the moment they first see it. Take a picture of
yourself and simply take in the wonder of this glistening blue lake. Spend the
night in tents.
Recommence
your Ladakh adventure after waking up to a stunning dawn over Pangong Tso. We
will follow the same route as yesterday, and after we cross Durbuk, we will
begin our ascent of Chang La, the third-highest motorable pass in the world,
which is 5360 meters high. Once we crossed Chang La, we stopped for lunch.
Following our meal, we travel to Karu, where we begin our ride on the
Manali-Leh Highway, which leads to Lah. We will travel by the well-known Druk
White Lotus School and the Thiksey monastery just before arriving in Leh. A
brief stop will be made to look around the monastery and snap some photos. We
will reach Leh for the second time during the expedition after riding for about
an hour. Stay in a hotel for the night.
Due
to the generally good state of the roads, the journey from Leh to Kargil takes
comparatively less time. On the Leh-Srinagar Highway, we say goodbye to Leh and
head towards Kargil along the powerful Indus River. As we ride through a
breathtaking moonscape to arrive at Lamayuru, which is home to the highest
monastery in the area, the scenery is captivating the entire way. We begin the
slow ascent to Fotu La (4108m) shortly after Lamayuru, and as we descend the
pass, we begin the ascent to Namika La (3700m), another high pass. These two
passes lead into the Musbekh Valley and are located in the Zanskar range. While
traveling to Kargil, we pass through several charming villages. Spend the
night.
Prepare
yourself for one of the most amazing riding experiences as you awaken to the
crisp Himalayan air. We leave our lodging and begin riding through Dras,
considered the second coldest inhabited region on Earth, towards the Kashmir
Valley. We stop briefly at the Dras War Memorial just before arriving in Dras.
We begin our ascent towards Zoji La (3528m) after Dras, and the vistas from the
summit are simply breathtaking. We enter the stunning Sonamarg valley, a
popular tourist site, after traversing the pass. We ride across the valley for
a few more hours before arriving at Srinagar. Spend the night in a hotel or
houseboat.
We
will travel through the breathtaking valleys of Kashmir on our way to the
Punjabi plains of Pathankot today. Since we will be climbing down and the road
conditions are generally good, the riding speed should be fairly quick despite
the distance. We will travel through two of the largest tunnels in the area on
our journey to Pathankot. Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel (9.2km) and Jawahar
Tunnel (2.85km). Since tomorrow will likewise be a long day of riding, get to
the hotel and get a good night's sleep.
This
once-in-a-lifetime experience comes to an end today. Since today's journey is
the longest of the 13-day expedition, we must begin as soon as possible. Since
we will be travelling on broad tarmac roads over the Punjab and Haryana plains,
the trip should go rather smoothly. Reach the location where it all began by
arriving in the capital by late evening. On this epic journey, say goodbye to
your motorbike. Check in Hotel in Delhi Overnight Stay in Delhi.
