Each Muria hamlet had a different clothing – feathers, flowers…an astounding amount of ingenuity seemed to go into their donning gear. The women had facial tattoos, shown with pride. The tattoos serve a decorative value but also act as protection charms. I lost track of what tribe was which (with the exception of the Bison-Horn Maria) and started referring to them as: the “stilt” tribe; “pom-pom” tribe, “cow-bell” tribe, etc.. Driving to and from these sites were more wonders to see… people cramming themselves into this little mini-taxi symetrical mounds of cow dung made into patties for fuel in the fields and a stop in a pottery village where the local potter whipped up a little pot for me on the spot which I graciously accepted and then had to hand-carry for the rest of the trip

to Jagdalpur, stopping along the way to see Bahigaon Muria village and Kiwai
Balenga Muria Gond village, which still uses the dormitory system known as
Ghotul. Once there, check into the hotel and, if time permits, visit Chitrakut

Dandami
Maria village with Bison Horn Head gear dance in the hamlet, Tirathgarh
waterfall, Maria and Dhurwa Tribal village, Chingitarai Tribal Market, and
Jagdalpur city in the afternoon. Spend the night at Hotel Naman Bastar.
Morning
tour of Raja Maria and Halba tribal villages; afternoon visit to Tokapal Tribal
Market of Maria, Halba, and Bhatra tribes; overnight stay at Hotel Naman Bastar
in Jagdalpur.

to Kanker in the morning, stopping along the way to see the Kondagaon Metal
Craft Village and the Kidechepra Wrought Iron Work Village. Once in Kanker,
trekkers can visit Chotadongri, a goddess temple with a lake, and take in
sweeping views of Kanker and the surrounding area. Spend the night in Kanker,
and if they'd like, have dinner at Kanker Palace with the royal family. Hotel -

Visit
an Indian cigarette factory in the morning, then drive to Kawardha, the home of
the Baiga tribes. Spend the night in Kawardha at the BJR Retreat hotel.
